Don’t take it personally.
You probably learned to type on a typewriter.
That’s ok. Let us teach you why typing a double space after a period
is completely unnecessary on today’s computers and devices.
Technology
The visual spacing that comes from a double-space after a period is now built into modern fonts and has been for some time. HTML has also eliminated double spaces, rendering them obsolete in modern (online) publishing.
Efficiency
Let’s face it, we’re all time-strapped. It not only takes less time and energy to type a single space, it saves space in long-form content like books, magazines and blogs. That may seem like a stretch, but every little bit helps.
Visual Appeal
This one is subjective, but most people find the aesthetics of single spaces more appealing. It’s a cleaner, simpler look. Why riddle your written page with visual holes when your text can flow without the extra long pauses?
Don’t believe us?
Here’s what the Modern Language Association
has to say about it.
